UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITES
Rock Mosques and Associated Sacred Sites of Mangystau
The serial property, located on the Mangystau Peninsula bordering the Caspian Sea, comprises five sacred sites carved into rock, together with extensive adjacent burial grounds. Beket-Ata, Shopan-Ata, Karaman-Ata, Shakpak-Ata, and Sultan-Epe are each associated with a Sufi master and date from the 12th to the 18th centuries.
The complexes, locally known as “underground mosques,” represent a distinctive type of sacred architecture created within natural caves, carved into steep rock formations, or excavated into the ground across the semi-desert landscape. Originating within the nomadic cultural environment of the Mangystau and Ustyurt plateaus, these sites embody a culture shaped by the evolution of sacred practices, in which Islamic Sufi spirituality organically continued and transformed much older traditions associated with ancestor veneration, the sacredness of the landscape, and the spiritual authority of religious leaders.
For centuries, these sites have served as important destinations for pilgrimage. The rock-carved sacred complexes vary from relatively small structures to more elaborate architectural ensembles. They feature diverse layouts and spatial arrangements, including prayer halls, mihrabs, rooms for contemplation and self-reflection, multifunctional spaces, and the tombs of saints.
The complexes also incorporate courtyards, water sources, sacred trees, pathways, and cemeteries, with the latter dating from the 10th to the 20th centuries.

BEKET ATA
Located about 230 km east of Aktau, in the remote Oglandy tract, Beket-Ata is one of Kazakhstan’s most revered sacred sites and an important pilgrimage destination.
Carved into soft chalk rock in the 18th century by the renowned Sufi scholar and spiritual leader Beket-Ata, the mosque served as a place of prayer, education, spiritual guidance, and Sufi learning. It is also his final resting place.
The underground complex features chambers carved directly into the rock, some resembling traditional Kazakh yurts, and is surrounded by an ancient necropolis with more than 100 monuments.
For centuries, pilgrims have traveled to this remote place to pray and seek spiritual blessings. Today, Beket-Ata remains an active sacred site visited by pilgrims and travelers from around the world.
SHOPAN ATA
The Shopan-Ata Underground Mosque is located in the Kyzylsu area, on the route to Beket-Ata and Bozzhyra.
Carved directly into the rock, the mosque dates back to the medieval period and consists of 12 rooms. It is surrounded by an extensive ancient necropolis featuring stone gravestones, enclosures, and mausoleums dating from the 10th to the 19th centuries.
According to local tradition, Shopan-Ata was a disciple of the great Sufi master Ahmad Yasawi and became a spiritual teacher and patron of shepherds.
Today, Shopan-Ata remains an important pilgrimage site and a remarkable combination of sacred architecture, ancient burial monuments, and Mangystau’s rich spiritual heritage.
KARAMAN ATA
According to local traditions, Karaman-Ata has long been a sacred place where people made solemn oaths and resolved disputes. It was believed that conflicts ended here and opposing sides came in search of justice and peace.
The underground mosque was carved into the rock and consists of three main chambers, including a prayer hall and the traditional burial chamber of Karaman-Ata.
The mosque is surrounded by an extensive ancient necropolis with medieval gravestones, saganatams, and mausoleums. Some stones feature carvings of everyday objects, weapons, and symbols reflecting the lives of those buried here.
Today, Karaman-Ata remains an important pilgrimage destination and is traditionally regarded as a protector of travelers and pilgrims.
SHAKPAK ATA
Located about 20 km northwest of Taushyk, near Sarytas Bay, the Shakpak-Ata complex is one of Mangystau’s most remarkable sacred sites.
Its main attraction is a unique 12th–13th-century rock-cut mosque with a distinctive cruciform layout, domed central hall, and a natural opening that brings light into the underground chamber.
According to local legend, Shakpak-Ata could create fire by striking his fingernails together. The surrounding flint deposits may have inspired this ancient story, as “Shakpak” is associated with flint and fire-making tools. The mosque is surrounded by an extensive ancient necropolis containing monuments dating from the 13th to the 19th centuries, reflecting the heritage of Turkmen and Kazakh communities.
Today, Shakpak-Ata remains an important pilgrimage destination and a unique place where ancient history, sacred traditions, rock architecture, and Mangystau’s dramatic landscape come together.
SULTAN EPE
The Sultan-Epe Underground Mosque is located on the northern coast of the Tupkaragan Peninsula, near the Caspian Sea. Carved directly into limestone, the mosque consists of nine chambers and is a remarkable example of Mangystau’s rock-cut architecture.
The sacred complex also includes the dramatic 5-kilometre-long Sultan-Epe Canyon and a well whose water is traditionally believed to have healing properties.
According to local legends, Sultan-Epe was the son of the Sufi mystic Hakim-Ata and a disciple of Ahmad Yasawi. He is revered as a protector of fishermen and people in danger at sea.
Today, Sultan-Epe is an important sacred site where rock architecture, dramatic landscapes, ancient traditions, and legends of the Great Steppe come together.
